Please note: If you are working with me to have you help you, please be sure to grant EDITOR status when sharing your tree and COLLABORATOR for DNA sharing. If you do not already have my ancestry.com username, please ask.

Sharing your tree

  1. From any page on Ancestry, click the Trees tab and choose a tree.
  2. In the top-right corner of your tree, click Share.
  3. To share your tree via email, click Email or Username; to get a link you can share, click Shareable Link.If you enter the recipient's email address or username, the invitation will be delivered via email. If you get a shareable link, you'll need to create a new invite link for each person you share your tree with.
  4. If you're sending an email, enter the recipient’s email address or username into the field. If you're sending a link, skip this step.Invite multiple people at once by clicking the green Add another email/user button.
  5. In the Role drop-down menu, choose which role you want the person to have.
    • Guest: Guests can view and add comments to a family tree. Guests cannot automatically view living people.
    • Contributor: Contributors can view and add comments, photos and stories to a family tree. They cannot remove content or edit existing tree content, and they cannot automatically view living people.
    • Editor: Editors can view and add people, records, comments, photos, and stories to a family tree. They can also remove and edit existing content. Editors can automatically view living people.
  6. If you're sending an email, click the Include a personal message field on the right to add a message. If you're sending a link, click Create link.
  7. To email the invitation, click Send Invites. If you're sending a link, click Copy link.If you're sending an email, the recipient will receive an email with the subject "Come see our family tree on Ancestry." Whether they click a button from the invitation email or click your link, if they have an Ancestry account and are logged in to it, the link in the invitation will take them to your tree. If they are not logged in to an account, the link will take them to a free account creation page.Once your invitation has been accepted, your tree will appear on the Trees drop-down menu in the recipient’s account.

Sharing your DNA Story and matches

  1. Sign in to your Ancestry account.
  2. From any page on Ancestry, click the DNA tab and select Your DNA Results Summary.
  3. From your DNA homepage, click the Settings button in the upper right-hand corner.
  4. Scroll down to the DNA Ethnicity and Matches Access section and click Add a person.
  5. In the field that appears, enter the email address or Ancestry username of the person you'd like to invite.All invitations are delivered via email, regardless of whether you enter an email address or username.
  6. Click Viewer to change the invitee's role and click Send Invitation.
    • viewer can view your full DNA results, but will not be able to add or change anything.
    • collaborator can view your full DNA results, add notes, edit participant details, and link your test to a tree.
    • manager can invite others to access the results, assign and change account roles, permanently delete the results, download raw DNA data, and send and respond to messages in the test owner’s account. The owner of a test (the person whose DNA was tested) can invite one person at a time to manage their test. The owner may add or remove a manager at any time.
